The Calton Athletic football team was formed in the mid eighties. The team was originally made up of recovering addicts from Glasgows East End as a way of strengthening their recovery and as a positive focus away from drugs and alcohol. The effects of playing football meant the players were physically fitter, more disciplined and felt better within themselves. There was also a strong feeling of camaraderie helping the team to bond. This was a big incentive for the team member's to stay clean and live a healthy lifestyle.

In the early days people may have laughed at a bunch of addicts playing in a football team. Well that notion was proved wrong as Calton Athletic has been successul beyond belief going on to win the Scottish Welfare Cup twice, in 1992 and 2001.
